Can You Take the RBT Exam Online?

If you Googled "rbt exam online or in person" hoping for an at-home option, here is the honest answer, why the rule exists, and everything you CAN do from your couch instead.

The short answer: No. The RBT exam is in-person only at authorized Pearson VUE testing centers. There is no at-home or online option. The BACB ended remote online proctoring for the RBT exam, and it has not come back, so plan your certification journey around a trip to a test center.

Why the RBT exam is in-person only

The RBT is a professional healthcare credential, and the exam has to prove that the person who earned the score is really the person being certified. The BACB previously allowed remote online proctoring for the RBT exam, but discontinued it over exam security concerns: verifying identity, preventing cheating, and controlling the testing environment are all much harder through a webcam in a candidate's living room.

This matters more for RBTs than most test-takers realize. Behavior technicians work directly with vulnerable clients, so the credential carries a duty of care. A secure, supervised testing environment is part of how the certification keeps its value with employers and families. Online training and online practice are great, but the actual exam stays behind locked doors.

Do not trust "take the RBT exam online" ads. Any site or service claiming to sell you an online RBT exam is either selling you training and calling it an exam, or running a scam. The only exam the BACB recognizes is delivered through Pearson VUE, in person.

Online vs in person: what each step of the RBT journey allows

The confusion usually comes from mixing up the steps. Some parts of becoming an RBT can absolutely be done online. The exam is the exception, not the rule.

What the exam itself looks like

Since you are making a trip to the center, here is what you are walking into. The RBT exam is 85 multiple-choice questions: 75 scored questions plus 10 unscored pilot questions that do not count toward your result. You get 90 minutes, which works out to just over one minute per question, so pacing is a real part of the test.

You take it on a computer at the test center, and you get your pass or fail result before you leave. No waiting weeks for a letter. See our breakdown of how many questions are on the RBT exam for the domain-by-domain weighting.

You cannot schedule until the BACB authorizes you. Pearson VUE bookings open only after the BACB approves your application and issues your Authorization to Test. Apply first, then pick a date and center. Read the full walkthrough in our RBT exam registration guide.

What this means for your planning

No online option means your exam date is also a logistics date. A few things that make it painless:

Everything you CAN do online (a lot, actually)

The only thing that requires leaving the house is the exam itself. Everything else in the journey is fair game from your couch:

Best of both worlds: do your training and prep online, then treat the in-person exam as test day. Practicing under timed conditions with the simulator is the closest thing to a rehearsal you can get.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the RBT exam online from home?

No. The RBT exam is in-person only at authorized Pearson VUE test centers. The BACB ended remote online proctoring for the RBT exam, so there is no at-home or laptop option. Only some other BACB exams offer online proctoring, which is why you may see conflicting information.

Did the RBT exam ever have an online option?

Yes. The RBT exam previously offered remote online proctoring, but the BACB discontinued it for security reasons. As of now, the BACB has not announced any plan to bring the online option back, so plan on testing in person.

Can I do my 40-hour RBT training online?

Yes. The 40-hour training requirement can be completed online, and many training providers offer fully online courses. The online rule applies to training only: the exam itself still has to be taken in person at a Pearson VUE test center. Do not confuse an online training course with an online exam.

Is the RBT exam online or in person?

In person only. You schedule through Pearson VUE and take the 85-question exam on a computer at one of their test centers. There is no online or at-home testing option for the RBT exam.

Can I take the RBT exam on a military base?

Possibly. Pearson VUE operates test centers on many US military installations, so check their test center search for on-base availability near your duty station. If there is no on-base center, you can test at any other authorized Pearson VUE center after the BACB issues your Authorization to Test.

How should I prepare for an in-person RBT exam?

Practice under realistic, timed conditions. The exam is 85 questions in 90 minutes, which is about one minute per question, so full-length timed practice tests are the best way to build pacing. Our free RBT practice test and the 85-question simulator both run on the same 90-minute clock so test day feels familiar.
