How RBT testing actually works
Unlike a college course with one fixed exam date, the RBT is a professional certification test with continuous scheduling. Once the BACB authorizes you, you pick a day and time at whichever Pearson VUE center works best, as long as seats are open. There are Pearson VUE centers across the country, including in most mid-sized cities, so most candidates can test within a reasonable drive of home.
The one thing to internalize: the RBT exam is in-person only. The BACB discontinued the remote online proctoring option for the RBT exam, so there is no taking it from your laptop at home. Some other BACB exams still offer online proctoring, which is why you may see conflicting information floating around. For the RBT specifically, plan on traveling to a center.
Finding the closest Pearson VUE center
After your Authorization to Test email lands, head to the Pearson VUE page for BACB exams. The scheduling flow lets you search for test centers by ZIP code and see real appointment availability, so you are not guessing about which dates are open. A few practical tips:
- Centers fill up. Popular locations, especially in large metro areas, book out. Lock in your date as soon as your authorization arrives if you want first choice.
- Read the center details. Many Pearson VUE centers sit inside office buildings or office parks. Check the exact address, building access instructions, and parking before exam day.
- Minimum lead time. Appointments must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance, and walk-ins are not allowed. Do not plan to show up and hope for a seat.
- You can test anywhere. Your authorization works at any Pearson VUE center, so if your closest location is full, check the next-nearest city or a morning slot.
Scheduling and reschedule fees
The exam fee you pay at scheduling is $45 per attempt. Life happens, so here is what Pearson VUE charges if you need to move your appointment. Fees are set by Pearson VUE and can change, so confirm the current amounts when you book.

What exam day looks like at the center
Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early. Check-in involves your ID, and the center stores personal items like your phone in a locker. Nothing personal goes into the testing room with you. If you need a break or a bathroom trip during the exam, raise your hand and a proctor must authorize it.
The exam itself is 85 multiple-choice questions on a computer, with 90 minutes on the clock. You will see your pass or fail status on screen before you leave the center. What if the nearest center is far away?
Because there is no online option, some candidates do have a real drive ahead of them. A few things make it easier. First, your authorization lasts one year and covers up to 8 attempts, so there is no rush to test the week you are approved. Use the time to study and then book a date that works around your schedule, like a morning slot that beats traffic.
