The short answer: You cannot just sign up for the RBT exam. First finish the requirements (40-hour training, competency assessment, background check), then apply through the BACB gateway and pay the $65 application fee. Once the BACB authorizes you, schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE center and pay the $45 exam fee. Authorization lasts one year and covers up to 8 attempts.
Step 1: Finish the eligibility requirements first
The BACB will not accept your application until the prerequisites are done. You must be 18 or older, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and pass a background check. The two big ones are the 40-hour training and the RBT competency assessment. The training must cover the current RBT task list curriculum, and the competency assessment must be conducted by a qualified BACB supervisor who observes you demonstrating the required skills. Our 40-hour training guide and competency assessment guide walk through each of these in detail.
Step 2: Create your BACB account and apply
Everything runs through the BACB gateway at bacb.com/rbt. Create your account, select the RBT application, upload your documentation (proof of age, diploma, training certificate, competency assessment form, background check), and submit. This is where you pay the $65 application fee. Double check your name matches your government ID exactly, because mismatches are one of the most common causes of delays at the test center.
One more detail worth knowing: the BACB processes applications in the order received, and review times vary through the year. Peak hiring seasons for ABA clinics can mean more applications in the queue. Apply as soon as your documents are complete rather than waiting for a perfect moment, because the one-year authorization clock does not start until you are approved. The sooner you are authorized, the sooner you can pick a test date that suits your schedule instead of taking whatever is left.
Step 3: Wait for authorization
After you apply, the BACB reviews your documents. Once approved, you are authorized to test. Your authorization is good for one year and up to 8 exam attempts. If your authorization expires before you pass, you start the application process, and the $65 fee, over again. So do not apply until you are genuinely close to ready.
Step 4: Schedule at Pearson VUE and pay the exam fee
Authorization in hand, go to Pearson VUE and pick your test center and date. You pay the $45 exam fee when you schedule. The exam is 90 minutes, 85 multiple-choice questions (75 scored, 10 unscored pilots), all in person at a Pearson VUE center. See how many questions are on the RBT exam for the full format breakdown, and our exam day tips so nothing surprises you at the door.
Pearson VUE centers fill up, especially in larger metro areas, so book as soon as you know your target date. When you schedule, you will get a confirmation with your test center's address and check-in rules. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early; late arrivals can be turned away and treated as a no-show, which burns one of your attempts. Rescheduling policies and fees are set by Pearson VUE, so check the current rules on their site before you lock in a date.
Step 5: If you fail, schedule a retake
About 1 in 4 first-timers fail, so a retake is normal, not a disaster. Each retake costs another $45 exam fee at Pearson VUE, and it draws from the same one-year, 8-attempt authorization. There is no mandatory waiting period published by the BACB, but take at least a week or two to drill your weak domains before retesting. Check the real numbers on our RBT exam pass rate page.
