The short answer: To earn RBT certification, you must be at least 18, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, complete the 40-hour training built on the RBT Test Content Outline 3rd edition, pass the RBT Competency Assessment with a qualified BACB supervisor, pass a national background check, pass the RBT exam (85 questions, 75 scored, 90 minutes), and submit your application through your BACB account. Once certified, you stay an RBT through ongoing supervision and annual renewal.
The seven requirements, explained
The Behavior Analyst Certification Board sets every one of these. There are no shortcuts and no equivalents: you complete all seven, in full, and the BACB verifies them before you are certified.
| Requirement | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| 1. Be at least 18 years old | You must meet the minimum age before you apply. There is no upper age limit and no age-based waiver process. |
| 2. High school diploma or equivalent | A diploma, GED, or equivalent credential qualifies. No college degree is required, and the RBT is designed as an entry-level credential. |
| 3. Complete the 40-hour training | The training must be based on the RBT Test Content Outline, 3rd edition, which took effect January 1, 2026. Training built on the old outline no longer counts. See our RBT 40 hour training guide for the rules. |
| 4. Pass the RBT Competency Assessment | A hands-on demonstration of your skills, watched and scored by a qualified BACB supervisor. It proves what you can do in a session, while the exam tests what you know. Details are in our competency assessment guide. |
| 5. Pass a national background check | The BACB runs a national criminal background check as part of the application process. It is a requirement you clear, not a fee you pay the testing center. |
| 6. Pass the RBT exam | 85 multiple-choice questions, 75 scored, in 90 minutes, taken in person at a Pearson VUE testing center. You learn your pass or fail result before you leave the building. |
| 7. Submit the certification application | You apply through your BACB account, documenting the training, the competency assessment, and the background check. The BACB reviews the application before authorizing your exam. |

The order that works in practice
The BACB lists the requirements, but candidates who plan them in the wrong order waste time and money. Here is the sequence that works:
- Do the 40-hour training first. You cannot demonstrate skills you have not learned yet. The training teaches the vocabulary and procedures from the 3rd edition outline that everything else builds on. Most candidates complete it through their employer or an online provider, and you should confirm it is based on the 3rd edition before you start.
- Pass the competency assessment with your supervisor. This comes after training, because the assessment asks you to demonstrate the skills the training taught. It is arranged through a qualified BACB supervisor, often the same BCBA who will supervise you on the job. A passing assessment goes into your application file.
- Apply through the BACB and clear the background check. Your certification application includes the training documentation, the competency assessment result, and the national background check. Submit everything through your BACB account, and our RBT exam registration guide walks through the steps.
- Take the exam last. Once the BACB approves your application, it authorizes you to schedule the exam at a Pearson VUE testing center. This is the final gate: pass it, and the BACB issues your certification.
What certification costs
The BACB's own fees are fixed and small: the exam fee is $45 and the application fee is $65, so the testing portion totals $110. Training costs extra and varies by provider, and the competency assessment and background check carry their own costs depending on who runs them. Our RBT exam cost guide breaks down every line item candidates actually pay, including the ones people forget to budget.
After you pass: staying certified
Certification is not a one-and-done achievement. The RBT credential is maintained through ongoing supervision and renewed annually, and the requirements keep you current on the standards you were certified to follow.
Ongoing supervision. Every RBT works under the supervision of a qualified BACB supervisor. This is not a recommendation, it is part of the credential: the RBT role is defined as working under direction, and unsupervised practice is outside the scope of the certification.
Annual renewal. You renew your certification each year through your BACB account. Renewal requires a fresh competency assessment, completed within 45 days of your certification expiration date, so your hands-on skills get re-verified on a regular cycle rather than only at the start of your career.
The takeaway. Think of certification as two phases. Phase one is the seven requirements on this page, ending at the testing center. Phase two starts the day you pass: supervised practice, renewed every year, with your competency reassessed on schedule. The credential only stays meaningful if it stays current.
