The short answer: Legitimate free RBT mock exams do exist, and a good one is the single best rehearsal for test day. But the search results are also full of brain dumps and "real exam question" scams. Know how to tell them apart, take your mock under the real 90-minute clock, and review every single miss.
Why a mock exam matters more than more studying
At some point, more reading stops helping. The RBT exam is 85 scenario-based questions in 90 minutes, and the challenge is as much about pacing and judgment under pressure as it is about knowledge. A full-length mock exam is the only study activity that trains all three at once: the content, the clock, and the calm.
It also tells you the truth about where you stand. A candidate who scores 82% on a timed 85-question run with fresh questions knows something real. A candidate who "feels ready" after re-reading notes knows nothing verifiable. The 2025 numbers are blunt about why this matters: 75% of first-time takers passed, but only 38% of retakers did. You get one good first shot. A mock exam is how you make sure it counts.
Where to find legitimate free mock exams
Start with these, all free and all built for the current exam:
- Our free RBT practice test (start here): a fast baseline check that tells you which domains need work before you commit to a full run.
- Our 85-question simulator (full dress rehearsal): the same question count, the same 90-minute clock, and scenario-based questions built on the 3rd edition outline, with coaching feedback that explains every answer.
- Training provider samples. Many 40-hour training programs publish free sample exams or question sets. If you trained with one, check whether yours includes practice exams you have not used yet.
- BACB-published materials. The BACB's RBT pages will not hand you a practice test, but the official Test Content Outline is the answer key for what any mock should cover. If a free mock ignores the outline's new tasks, it is not current.
Brain-dump scams: what to avoid
Search "rbt practice exam free with answers" and you will also find sites selling or sharing supposedly real exam questions recalled by past test-takers. These are called brain dumps, and you should stay far away from them for three reasons.
- They violate exam security. The BACB requires candidates to keep exam content confidential. Buying, selling, or sharing recalled questions breaks that agreement and can cost you the credential.
- The questions are usually wrong or outdated. Recalled questions are reconstructed from memory by people who may have failed, and most dumps predate the 3rd edition anyway.
- They do not even help. The BACB uses multiple exam forms calibrated to comparable difficulty. Memorizing someone else's remembered questions does not prepare you for your version; it prepares you for theirs, badly.
Red flags for a scammy site: promises of "real" or "actual" exam questions, pay-per-download question dumps with no explanation of answers, and any request for your BACB login or personal details. A legitimate prep platform writes original questions and explains every answer.
How to use a mock exam properly
A mock exam is a tool, and like any tool it only works if you use it right. Here is the method that actually converts practice into a passing score:
- Take it timed, in one sitting. 85 questions, 90 minutes, no pausing, no phone. Anything else is a quiz, not a rehearsal.
- Use fresh questions. Retaking the same exam two or three times maxes out its value. After that you are testing your memory of the answer key, not your judgment.
- Review every miss until you can teach it. For each wrong answer, write down why the right answer is right and why your pick was wrong. If you cannot explain it out loud, you have not learned it.
- Review your correct guesses too. Flag questions you got right by luck during the run. A lucky guess is a knowledge gap wearing a disguise.
- Track your domain scores. If behavior reduction is at 60% and ethics is at 95%, your next study block is obvious. Study to the weakest domain, not your favorite one.
- Repeat with new questions until the score holds. One 80% run is a data point. Two or three in a row is a trend. Schedule when the trend says you are ready.
Free can absolutely be enough
Here is the encouraging part: what matters is the method, not the price tag. Timed scenario-based practice on the 3rd edition outline, with every miss reviewed until you can explain it, beats expensive materials that are just passive reading. Free mock exams done properly will take you all the way there. Start with the free practice test, graduate to the 85-question simulator, and let the checklist above tell you when to schedule.
- Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification page, Behavior Analyst Certification Board, covers eligibility, application, and examination requirements.
- Examination information, Behavior Analyst Certification Board, covers authorization, scheduling, and exam delivery options.
- BACB certification exams, Pearson VUE, covers test center scheduling, appointments, and center search.
