RBT Measurement Guide

Data is the RBT superpower. This guide covers every measurement type on the exam, when to use each one, and how to read the graphs your supervisor lives by.

The short answer: Measurement is how RBTs turn behavior into numbers. Continuous measurement (frequency, rate, duration, latency) captures every instance of a behavior. Discontinuous measurement (partial interval, whole interval, momentary time sampling) samples slices of time. Your supervisor picks the method, you collect the data accurately, and line graphs show whether the plan is working.

Why measurement runs the whole show

Everything in ABA starts with data. Before your supervisor can write a plan, someone has to measure the behavior. During the plan, someone has to keep measuring to see if it works. That someone is you. About 17% of the RBT exam lives in this domain, and the questions are refreshingly concrete: which measurement fits this behavior, what does this graph show, which recording method overestimates. Learn the definitions cold and this domain becomes free points.

Continuous measurement: catch everything

Continuous measurement records every single instance of the behavior during the observation. Use it when you need the full picture.

Discontinuous measurement: sample smart

Discontinuous measurement chops time into intervals and records whether the behavior happened in each one. Use it when continuous recording is impractical, like tracking a behavior across a whole school day.

Exam trap alert: partial interval overestimates, whole interval underestimates, momentary time sampling is the middle ground. If a question asks which method inflates the data, the answer is partial interval almost every time.

Graphing: the line graph is your report card

Behavior analysts graph data on line graphs: time goes on the horizontal x-axis, the behavior measure goes on the vertical y-axis. Each data point is one session or observation, connected by lines so you can see the path of progress. When the intervention changes, a vertical phase line marks the switch, with labels like Baseline and Intervention.

Reading a graph means checking three things: level (are the points high or low), trend (are they going up, down, or flat), and variability (are they bouncy or steady). A good intervention shows the level moving in the right direction with a clear trend. Your job as an RBT is not to redesign the graph, it is to collect data cleanly enough that the graph tells the truth.

Data integrity is an ethics issue. Never estimate, round generously, or fill in data you did not actually collect. If you missed an observation, report the gap. Fabricated data can lead to wrong clinical decisions and it violates the ethics code.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between continuous and discontinuous measurement?

Continuous measurement records every instance of the behavior during the observation period. Discontinuous measurement divides time into intervals and records whether the behavior occurred in each interval, sampling rather than capturing everything.

Which discontinuous method overestimates behavior?

Partial interval recording overestimates behavior because the whole interval gets marked even if the behavior happened for only a second. It is the safe choice for dangerous behaviors you cannot afford to miss.

Which discontinuous method underestimates behavior?

Whole interval recording underestimates behavior because the interval only counts if the behavior filled the entire interval. It works well for behaviors you want to increase, like continuous on-task behavior.

What does rate tell you that frequency does not?

Rate divides frequency by time, so it accounts for observation length. Ten responses in ten minutes (1 per minute) is very different from ten responses in two hours, and only rate shows that.

What goes on each axis of a behavior graph?

Time goes on the horizontal x-axis and the behavior measure, such as frequency or percentage, goes on the vertical y-axis. Data points are connected with lines, and phase lines mark changes in conditions.

What is permanent product recording?

Measuring the lasting outcome a behavior leaves behind instead of observing the behavior itself, such as counting completed math problems, assembled items, or a cleaned bedroom. It works when the product reliably reflects the behavior.
