How RBT Exam Questions Actually Work

The exam is 85 multiple choice questions in 90 minutes. But the format is only half the story: most questions are short scenarios that test what you would do, not what you can define. Here is how to read them.

The short answer: Expect 85 multiple choice questions with one best answer each: 75 scored plus 10 unscored pilot questions you cannot identify, with 90 minutes on the clock. Most items are brief scenarios, and the wrong options are designed to catch scope-of-practice mistakes and overthinking.

Do the pacing math before test day: 90 minutes divided by 85 questions is just over one minute per question. That pace feels comfortable until a scenario stem slows you down, which is why timed practice matters more than untimed review.

The scenario stem: the exam's favorite format

A typical stem sets a scene in one or two sentences, then asks what the RBT should do. "You are running a matching program and the client pushes the materials away and cries. What do you do first?" The exam is testing whether you can apply a procedure, stay in scope, and follow the plan. Definition questions exist, but they are the minority.

When you practice, spend most of your time on scenario items, because that is where the points are. Reading a term and recognizing it earns you a few questions. Reading a situation and choosing the right action earns you most of the exam.

The four answer choices, decoded

Most items follow a pattern. One choice is the correct RBT-level action. One is the scope trap: the right clinical move for a BCBA, but not something an RBT does independently, like designing or changing a plan. One is the overreaction: too much, too fast, or skipping steps. And one is simply wrong for the situation.

Train yourself to ask two questions of every option: "Is this something an RBT is allowed to do?" and "Does it follow the written plan?" Those two filters eliminate most traps before you even compare the details.

Words that change everything

Watch for absolutes and order words. "First" and "best" ask for priority, not just a correct action. "Most appropriate" means the other options might be fine in general but wrong here. "As written" or "according to the plan" means: do what the plan says, even if another option sounds smarter.

Also watch for who is acting. If the stem says "the BCBA asks you to," the question may be testing whether you recognize a task outside your scope. If it says "your supervisor is unavailable," the answer is almost never to improvise. And if two options both look right, pick the one that keeps you inside the RBT role.

The pilot questions you cannot spot

Ten questions on your exam do not count. They are being tested for future exams, and they are mixed in so you cannot tell which ones they are. The practical takeaway: do not try to guess which questions are pilots, and do not let one strange question rattle you. Treat every item the same, answer it, and move on. A question that feels "off" might be a pilot, or it might just be testing a new 3rd edition task you have not studied. Either way, your job is the same.

How questions map to the six domains

The 75 scored questions follow the 3rd edition weights: about 25% behavior acquisition, 19% behavior reduction, 17% data collection and graphing, 15% ethics, 13% documentation and reporting, and 11% behavior assessment. Roughly one in four questions is about teaching skills, and nearly one in five is about ethics.

Study time should follow the same split. Candidates who split their hours evenly across six domains overstudy the smallest ones and understudy the biggest ones. Weight your effort like the exam weights its questions.

Read the Stem: 4 Illustrative Questions

These are illustrative examples written for this guide, not real exam items. Practice the two filters: is it in the RBT role, and does it follow the plan?

Your BCBA's behavior plan says to use a 5-second time delay. Mid-session you think a 3-second delay would work better. What do you do?

B. Implement procedures as written. Noticing something is great; changing the plan on your own is outside the RBT role. Report it and let the BCBA decide.

A client begins crying and pushing materials away during a demand. What is your first step?

B. Follow the plan as written and keep collecting data. Ending demands, removing the session, or redesigning the intervention are all outside the RBT role.

Which of these is an example of discontinuous measurement?

B. Whole-interval recording samples behavior in intervals rather than capturing every occurrence, which makes it discontinuous. Frequency, duration, and latency are continuous measures.

A parent offers you a $100 gift card for the holidays. What should you do?

B. The RBT Ethics Code 2.0 has specific gift giving and receiving guidelines. The safe move is to decline politely, follow your organization's policy, and let your supervisor know.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the RBT exam?

85 questions in 90 minutes: 75 scored plus 10 unscored pilot questions that are indistinguishable from the scored ones. The exam is delivered at Pearson VUE test centers.

Are the questions multiple choice?

Yes. Every item is multiple choice with a single best answer. Most are short scenarios asking what the RBT should do, rather than straight definition questions.

Are the questions mostly scenarios or definitions?

Mostly scenarios testing application: what you would do in a session, which procedure fits, what stays in scope. Definition questions exist but are the minority, so practice scenario items most.

How should I pace myself during the exam?

You have just over one minute per question on average. Do not let a hard scenario eat five minutes; answer, move on, and trust your preparation. Timed practice is the best way to build this habit.

Do the pilot questions count against me?

No. The 10 pilot questions are unscored and you cannot tell which ones they are. Treat every question the same and do not try to guess which ones are pilots.

Is everyone given the same questions?

No. Questions are drawn from an item bank, so each candidate gets a different mix. Every version covers the same 3rd edition outline and domain weights, so the preparation is identical.
