The short answer: The RBT exam is a computer-based test taken in person at Pearson VUE testing centers. You cannot schedule it until the BACB authorizes your application, after which you book your own appointment with Pearson VUE. On test day you need a valid government-issued photo ID matching your BACB record, and personal items like phones and notes stay outside the testing room. You get your pass or fail result before you leave the center.
How RBT exam scheduling works
The RBT exam is not something you sign up for directly. The process has two gates, and Pearson VUE is the second one:
- Get authorized by the BACB. You complete your eligibility requirements, including the 40-hour training, the competency assessment, and the background check, then apply through the BACB. The current RBT Handbook on bacb.com walks through the exact steps and fees, which can change, so always check the live document.
- Book with Pearson VUE. Once the BACB approves you, you receive authorization to test with instructions for scheduling. You pick your testing center and appointment time directly with Pearson VUE.
Give yourself a buffer. Popular centers fill up, and you want your appointment scheduled far enough out that you can finish your timed practice runs before it, not scrambling to cram after it. If you need to reschedule, Pearson VUE has its own rescheduling rules and deadlines, so read them when you book.
What to bring (and what stays outside)
Pearson VUE centers are secure testing environments. The short version: bring almost nothing.
- Bring: a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID, and your appointment confirmation details.
- Leave in your car or the provided storage: your phone, smartwatch, bags, notebooks, study materials, food, and drinks.
- Expect: a check-in process that can include ID verification, a photo, and possibly palm or signature capture, depending on the center.
The center provides everything you need for the test itself: the computer, scratch materials if allowed, and noise-reducing headphones at many locations. You do not need to bring pencils, calculators, or anything else. Check the RBT Handbook for the current rules before your appointment, because policies can be updated.
Your test-day timeline
What happens inside the testing room
After check-in, you are seated at a computer and the exam begins. You get 85 multiple-choice questions and 90 minutes on the clock. The interface lets you move forward and back, mark questions to revisit, and review your marked items before you finish. Use that: the two-pass method (quick answers first, marked questions second, blanks filled last) is the pacing strategy that survives contact with a real clock.
Remember that 10 of the 85 questions are unscored pilot items and you cannot tell which ones they are. Treat every question as scored. There is no penalty for a wrong answer beyond not earning the point, but a blank question earns zero for certain, so never leave one unanswered.
When you finish, you submit the exam and receive your result at the center before you leave: pass or fail. No weeks of waiting. Your official certification status is then processed through the BACB.
If you do not pass
It happens, and it is recoverable. The BACB's own 2025 data showed only about 38 percent of retakers passed, which sounds discouraging until you understand why: retakers often re-study the same way that failed the first time. The RBT Handbook explains the retake application process, including any waiting periods and fees, so check the current version on bacb.com before reapplying.
Before your retake, get your score report and study it like data. It shows your weak areas by content domain. That report is a gift: it tells you exactly where your points leaked. Rebuild your study plan around those domains, weighted to the 3rd edition outline, and do your timed practice runs against fresh question sets, not the same ones you already memorized.
