The short answer: The RBT 3rd edition Test Content Outline (effective January 1, 2026) contains 43 tasks organized into 6 domains: Behavior Acquisition, Behavior Reduction, Data Collection and Graphing, Ethics, Documentation and Reporting, and Behavior Assessment. It replaced the 2nd edition Task List: 8 new tasks were added (including cultural humility and punishment procedures), 4 old tasks were removed or consolidated, and 4 domains were renamed. Every exam question traces back to one of these 43 tasks.
1 From Task List to Test Content Outline
The name change is the first thing to learn, because it is also a search filter: if a resource still says "RBT Task List," it is describing the pre-2026 exam. The BACB renamed the blueprint the Test Content Outline for the 3rd edition and restructured it around 43 tasks, up from 37. The exam still has 85 questions (75 scored, 10 unscored pilots) in 90 minutes, but every one of those questions now traces to the new task set.
Four domains were renamed for clarity: Measurement became Data Collection and Graphing, Assessment became Behavior Assessment, Skill Acquisition became Behavior Acquisition, and Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice became Ethics. Behavior Reduction and Documentation and Reporting kept their names. The renaming was not just cosmetic: several domains gained or lost tasks, which changed how many questions each one gets.
2 The 6 domains at a glance
| Domain | Tasks | Exam share | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Behavior Acquisition | 11 | 25% | Down from 12 tasks and 32% |
| Behavior Reduction | 7 | 19% | Up from 6 tasks and 16% |
| Data Collection and Graphing | 8 | 17% | Up from 6 tasks; added graph reading and data summarization |
| Ethics | 10 | 15% | Doubled from 5 tasks |
| Documentation and Reporting | 4 | 13% | Trimmed from 5 tasks |
| Behavior Assessment | 3 | 11% | Same 3 tasks; share rose from 8% |

Tap a domain to see what its tasks cover.
11 tasks, 25% of the exam (about 19 questions). The biggest domain. Its tasks cover how you teach new skills: reinforcement (positive, negative, conditioned, unconditioned), schedules of reinforcement, prompting and prompt fading, discrete trial teaching, naturalistic teaching, shaping, chaining, and generalization and maintenance of learned skills. Study this domain as procedures you could run, not definitions you could recite.
7 tasks, 19% of the exam (about 14 questions). How you respond to interfering behavior: identifying functions of behavior, implementing behavior reduction procedures as written in the plan, crisis and emergency procedures, and the newly added punishment procedures with their ethical considerations. The exam tests whether you follow the plan exactly and stay inside your scope.
8 tasks, 17% of the exam (about 13 questions). The renamed measurement domain, and a major growth area. Tasks cover continuous measurement (frequency, rate, duration, latency, interresponse time), discontinuous measurement (whole interval, partial interval, momentary time sampling), permanent product recording, graphing data, reading graph trends, and summarizing data for your supervisor. The last two are new in the 3rd edition.
10 tasks, 15% of the exam (about 11 questions). The doubled domain. Tasks cover the RBT Ethics Code 2.0 core principles, professional boundaries, confidentiality, supervision requirements, scope of practice, and the new cultural humility tasks. Expect scenario questions where two answers look kind and only one is ethical.
4 tasks, 13% of the exam (about 10 questions). How you record and report: objective session notes, data documentation, communicating with supervisors, and reporting requirements. The exam rewards notes that describe observable behavior with no opinions, labels, or jargon.
3 tasks, 11% of the exam (about 8 questions). The smallest domain by tasks but larger in weight than before. Tasks cover assisting with assessments: preparing materials, running trained assessment procedures, collecting ABC data, and conducting preference assessments. The golden rule: you assist and report, the BCBA designs and interprets.
4 What is new and what is gone
Eight tasks were added. The highest-priority new ones: cultural humility (recognizing personal biases and adapting practice to client and family culture), punishment procedures (within behavior reduction, with ethical guardrails), graph trend reading, and data summarization. Four old tasks were removed or consolidated, and Ethics absorbed the biggest restructuring, doubling from 5 to 10 tasks. Our crosswalk guide lays out every move side by side.
5 How to study the list task by task
Do not memorize the outline like a poem. Work it like a checklist: for each task, write one sentence describing what it looks like in a session and one scenario where it applies. Then take a practice test and map every miss back to its task. Tasks you never miss need no more study; tasks that collect misses become your study plan. Repeat until the outline has no surprises left, then confirm with two consecutive timed mocks in the passing range.
Turn the outline into a passing score
Study the 43 tasks, then prove it with a timed full-length practice test and a domain-by-domain breakdown.
